Specialist oncology nursing at the UMM

A cancer diagnosis means an (involuntary) fall from normal reality.

Quote from Nikolaus Gerdes, 1985 (German pop singer)

According to forecasts, we expect 510,000 new cases of cancer in 2020 (source RKI 17.12.2019).
Thanks to individualized medicine, many advanced cancers can be kept stable for a long time. The quality of life can match that of other chronic diseases.

Specialist oncology nursing is part of the interdisciplinary treatment team and takes on a mediating and advisory role. At every stage of the disease, oncology nurses are available as contact persons for patients and their relatives.

They provide evidence-based, guideline-based and individual advice on oncological nursing topics, such as the management of side effects of therapy, changes in body image or nutrition.

She is part of an interdisciplinary network, together with psycho-oncologists, social workers/nursing transitions, nutritionists, pastoral nursing workers and all other cooperation partners. Oncological nursing is also on hand to provide advice in the palliative situation.

In complex disease situations, needs are assessed through multidisciplinary oncological nursing visits. Measures are introduced, evaluated and adapted if necessary. The fields of action for oncological nursing are specified by the DKG survey forms.

In addition to regular oncological nursing rounds, these also require the creation of induction concepts and further training plans for employees.

In the annual audits, oncology nursing contributes to the certification of the organ cancer centers and the Oncology Center.

Standing up for the right to qualified nursing and modern therapy

According to the Federal Ministry of Health, between 330,000 and 380,000 people are newly diagnosed with cancer every year. Due to demographic trends, it can be assumed that the number of new cases of cancer will continue to increase in the future.
Cancer is the challenge of the future, but also the challenge of the present. Not only those affected themselves, but also those involved in the healthcare system are facing this challenge.
The personal impairment of those affected, modern therapy and the right of patients to comprehensive advice and treatment require competent, qualified nursing.

A cancer diagnosis poses challenges that are difficult to cope with, not only for the person affected but also for their entire social environment.
Our task is to provide you with advice, organize procedures and accompany you through your inpatient stay. Our aim is also to ensure that you receive the support you need after your hospital stay.
We work closely with the medical therapy team, psycho-oncology, nursing and social counseling and the PalMa palliative care network.
