A child's smile says more than 1000 words

EMERGENCY ROOM FOR CHILDREN

And if a child unfortunately doesn't feel like smiling, our specially trained team will do everything possible to put a smile back on their face as quickly as possible. The well-being of our young patients is always our top priority!

When are we there for you?

Our emergency department is staffed 365 days a year, 24 hours a day and therefore provides emergency treatment for children and adolescents with pediatric and pediatric surgical and traumatological conditions around the clock. The age spectrum ranges from 0 to 18 years, which requires a high degree of empathy for the respective age groups, but also for the parents and relatives in this special situation.

Treatment spectrum:

A small excerpt

The Manchester Triage System

MTS

The Manchester Triage System (MTS) is a standardized procedure for systematic initial assessment in the emergency department. MTS was developed in the UK in the 1990s and is now used in many countries, particularly in Europe. This validated procedure enables us to recognize the severity of the illness or injury within a very short time and to classify the urgency of treatment by means of categorization. Determining the priority of treatment quickly and reliably is a basic prerequisite for being able to initiate urgent medical treatment immediately if resources are limited, thereby protecting the well-being of our patients. During the course of treatment, a decision is then made as to whether the young patient will be discharged home after treatment or admitted to inpatient nursing.

However, as the University Children's Hospital Mannheim, we are not only responsible for all acute emergency situations, but also for children and adolescents affected by serious, complex and rare diseases.

Head of children's emergency room

I am Andrea Steinrücke, since 2011 I have been the nursing manager of the Children's Emergency Department (NOKI), the pediatric outpatient clinics, the pediatric surgery outpatient clinic and patient management at the Children's Center. I trained as a pediatric nurse at the UMM from 1982 to 1985. After my training, I worked in dermatology for 4 years before moving back to the pediatric clinic in 1989. From 1992 to 2011, I was head of the 30-3 ward (acute and infection ward) and in 2011 I moved to the pediatric emergency department as head. What makes my job special is the mixture of patient care, organization of the different areas and management tasks.

I lead a large team of different professional groups who work well together and face all the challenges that arise every day professionally but also with heart, thus contributing to good patient care. Even after so many years in the profession and despite the many obstacles that we encounter time and again in nursing, I still have fun and enjoy my work. I would choose the profession of pediatric nurse again and again.

Our team

The broad and, above all, varied treatment spectrum of our pediatric emergency department offers the opportunity to acquire a high level of specialist knowledge and experience the benefits of continuous further training.
In addition, we offer emergency simulation training and resuscitation training several times a year in order to be able to act competently in emergency situations.

The induction of new employees takes place over a period of at least 4 months, with each new employee being assigned a mentor in addition to the practice supervisor, who ideally accompanies them for the entire induction period.
We are always happy to welcome inquisitive, responsible, committed and motivated new members to our team.

We are a well-coordinated, motivated team that supports each other and works successfully in a 3-shift system according to the motto "The only way to do great work is to love what you do".

We consist of:

  • Certified pediatric and nursing staff
  • Medical assistants
  • Emergency nurses
  • Practice supervisors
  • Nursing trainees and/or interns
  • Pediatricians
  • Pediatric surgeons
  • Pediatric radiologists
  • The child protection team
  • PALS team

Practice instructors

We, Vanessa Morath and Katja Glock, are responsible for instructing our trainees and new employees in the UMM's pediatric emergency department. We offer a wide range of learning opportunities due to the many different specialist areas, which makes it very interesting and exciting. We love our profession and hope that our guidance and knowledge transfer in the often turbulent process in the admissions department and outpatient clinics will give the new trainees and employees confidence in dealing with our young and older patients as well as specialist background knowledge. In addition to providing competent and professional nursing care to patients and parents in our admissions department, respect, appreciation and empathy are very important to us.

We also want to convey these values to our trainees.
