PEDIATRIC HEMATOLOGY AND ONCOLOGY

Our ward 31-4 has 16 beds spread over 10 patient rooms. Two patient rooms are lock rooms for reverse isolation, in which autologous stem cell transplants are also carried out.

We treat patients from newborns to young adults with the complete spectrum of benign and malignant blood diseases, all other malignant diseases, coagulation disorders and immunodeficiencies. We also treat general pediatric and surveillance patients who are free of infections.

Knowledge transfer in a team

Our dedicated nursing team is made up of experienced and new employees; four of them have specialist training in oncology nursing. The induction of new employees takes place over a total of six months in accordance with our induction concept, the first four weeks together with the practice instructor. Our nursing activities are based on a relationship process that takes into account the individual needs of patients and psychosocial issues.

We see the close cooperation in the multi-professional team (nursing including outpatient pediatric nurse, doctors, physiotherapist, psychologist, pastoral nursing worker, educator, social worker, teachers from the hospital school, music and art therapists) as an important basis for patient care. A multi-professional meeting takes place once a week, which is one of the requirements of our certification from the German Cancer Society, which we obtained last year.

Special nursing concept

A project group has developed a special oncological nursing concept - based on the nursing concept of the UMM - for our ward. Patients, accompanying persons and visitors have access to a parents' kitchen, a playroom and a terrace, the equipment for which was financed almost exclusively by the DLFH (Deutsche Leukämie Forschungshilfe, Ortsverband Mannheim e. V.).

In addition, the DLFH enables numerous other projects to support the affected families and the clinic: music, art and physiotherapy, clinic clowns, parent breakfast, outpatient children's nursing care, visits from "Adler Mannheim" ice hockey players, courage pearls, wish fairies, summer party and Christmas party as well as supervision for all staff on the ward.

Together with Heidelberg University Hospital, the UMM maintains its own SAPPV team for children and adolescents.
