What does MIA mean?
Mannheim Interprofessional Education Center

When was the MIA training ward established?
The MIA training ward has existed since September 2017 and was originally located on ward 11-2 (II. Medical Clinic Infection Ward). Due to the coronavirus pandemic, the MIA has been relocated to ward 1-42 A until further notice.

Which specialty is treated on the MIA?
Gastroenterology, this specialty deals with diseases of the gastrointestinal tract.

How many patients are treated on the MIA?
It is possible to treat up to 12 patients in an interprofessional team.

What does it mean to work in an interprofessional team?
Medical students in their 5th year of study or PJ (practical year), physiotherapy trainees and nursing trainees learn together in the team. Each professional group provides the students with their own supervisors.

What is a supervisor?
In this case, it is the practice supervisor who, as a learning guide, monitors the nursing measures carried out at the learning location for correctness, intervenes in critical situations and makes a significant contribution to learning success by designing learning situations, evaluation and reflection discussions.

How many patients will I care for as a trainee there?
The supervision ratio for nursing trainees is a maximum of 1:4.

How many workstations with digital access options are there for the nursing trainees?
There is 1 workroom with 5 computer workstations that can be used equally by all professional groups. The room is connected to the ward's bell system.

How is a working day organized on the MIA?
There is a fixed daily routine for all professional groups involved, in which joint meetings and learning opportunities are scheduled. In the interprofessional morning meeting, patients are briefly introduced and physiotherapy needs are determined.
The morning ward round is organized interprofessionally. Each professional group is responsible for certain topics. For example, the nursing and medical professions are responsible for the area of nutrition. The nursing trainees are required to contribute their nursing assessment of the patient's self-care deficits in the problem areas of pain, nutrition and self-care, as well as to give a professional account of their observations of the patient.
MIA at lunchtime is a daily interprofessional meeting. The students from the individual professional groups provide each other with short training sessions. The meeting also provides a space for a joint exchange of ideas about working together, as well as the opportunity to express criticism and suggestions for improvement.
