Ward 16 - 2
PALLIATIVE CARE UNIT
Quality of life for the rest of your life
The palliative care ward 16-2 (formerly 17-3) is part of the III Medical Clinic and was established in 1998; this ward has space for 12 to 14 patients. People with advanced, incurable illnesses with a limited life expectancy are cared for here. The focus is on symptom treatment so that the remaining time of life can be spent at home with the highest possible quality of life. Palliative medicine affirms life and sees dying as a part of life; it does not accelerate or delay death.
The aim is to improve the patient's quality of life and their physical and mental stability.
Our goals are:
- to create or maintain the highest possible quality of life for our patients
- to alleviate pain and other stressful symptoms
- to support patients and relatives in the event of emotional and social stress and to offer support
- Organizing and supporting discharge to the desired environment
We achieve this through:
- Specially trained staff
- Use of aroma nursing as well as activating and accompanying therapeutic nursing
- Involvement and support of relatives and friends
- An appropriate framework for the dying and their relatives and an open approach to dying and death
- Provision of grief counseling services
- a pleasant atmosphere
The ward team includes:
- Certified nursing staff with palliative care training, oncology specialist nursing, pain nurse, kinaesthetics and wound assistant training
- Senior ward physician and assistant physician
- Ward secretary
- Physiotherapists
- Psychologist
- Music therapy/volunteer music students

- SAPV team
- Service staff

Non-profit development association
Our charitable association, which has been supporting the palliative care unit with great commitment since 2012, is important for our work.
This includes
- Covering the costs of aromatherapy nursing
- dog therapy
- the homely furnishings and decoration
- Fulfilling heartfelt wishes such as pizza or a book
- Celebrations for patients
Even if nothing more can be done, there is still a lot to do - thank you for your support
There are many other things that support and promote the well-being of our patients; we are therefore very grateful and proud of our Palliative Care Unit Support Association at Mannheim University Hospital, whose support is financed by donations. Overall, our work on the palliative care ward is only possible thanks to the great commitment of all the staff involved.
