Ward 1 - 31 / MICA
MANNHEIM INTERPROFESSIONAL SURGICAL TRAINING CENTER
MICA 1-42 B II. Surgical general ward
How is a working day organized at MICA?
- The daily routine is structured by a daily schedule agreed between nursing and medicine, in which interprofessional intersections are clearly defined. For example, the morning handover to the PJ students is ensured by the nursing trainees in accordance with the SBAR concept. The ward round is carried out jointly. In a subsequent interprofessional meeting, the individual nursing recipients are discussed in detail and questions from the students are clarified. The nursing trainees should learn to identify self-care deficits on the part of the nursing recipients with regard to movement, pain and nutrition and to provide a professionally sound account of their observations of the patient. The trainees use the subsequent work phase, supported by the respective supervisor, to learn with, about and from each other in practical activities (e.g. when placing a feeding tube). The shift change at lunchtime is used to hand over the nursing recipients and for reflection.
- There are short training sessions on specialist topics 2-3 times a week. These are prepared and held alternately by the trainees of the two professional groups.
- In the afternoon, a joint ward round takes place during the late shift in an inter-professional exchange.
Mannheim Interprofessional Surgical Training Center
The training ward MICA, 1-42 B was established in November 2020.
General surgery is a vaguely defined part of surgery (manual or instrumental manual work for care recipient care). It includes basic surgical care ("basic surgery") as well as parts of trauma, visceral (=abdominal) and vascular surgery.
Up to 8 care recipients are cared for by the interprofessional team.
Medical students in their 5th year of study or PJ (practical year), physiotherapy trainees and nursing trainees learn together in the team. Each professional group provides the students with their own supervisors.
